Does /nen/ play VNs?

I tend to take my time when reading them so I just finished Kira☆Kira a year or so after I started! Kirari's normal route was definitely the best!
The game had a pretty slow pace and reading through the story was very relaxing, although there were some intense moments as well! Maybe I'll become a punk rocker and travel across the country if I ever learn how to play guitar!

Please share your VN experiences and recommendations in this thread!

 No.8467

I'm just rereading himatsubushi right now. Haven't read many visual novels besides that lately.

 No.8483

last thing I read was va-11 hall A. It was fun.

Please let me know when you become a punk rocker. I'll join you. I even know a few chords!

Haven't played one in ages. Would rather just watch a show or play a game. I haven't read a book in even longer though. Maybe my brain has turned to mush like everyone says.

Perhaps you just don't like reading books? There's nothing wrong with that, I understand how it could be boring for a lot of people!
I like reading a lot but it's been difficult for me to find the time to read something lately…

 No.8499

>>8495
True. Usually I fall asleep if I'm reading large amounts of text unless I'm really interested in it.

 No.8501

I started the gochiusa vn a month or so ago if that counts but I haven't played it in a while

 No.8506

I've steered clear of VNs because I'm not fluent enough in japanese to read them properly…

I know there's translation aggregators and other tools that can help but it feels like I'm cheating. I don't know if that makes sense…

Like >>8508 said they're usually used to help you get better at Japanese! Just look up the words you don't know or maybe try to play a translated version first so you know what's going on!
There are lots of great translations for a lot of VNs so you don't have to know any Japanese to read those, you might miss out on some great puns though! Just try to stay clear of mangagamer translations since those are usually pretty terrible... Although those might be unavoidable if you don't speak any Japanese at all!

I've started to re-read sharin no kuni since I dropped the game before finishing all routes last time I played it! Maybe I'll share some funny screenshots in this thread!

 No.8540

>>8538
>those are usually pretty terrible
Yeah, although I appreciate what mangagamer does, their translation quality wasn't so great from what I remember. I heard they've been improving though.

>>8512
The anime general never stopped people from making more anime threads, so it's probably okay to have a few of these as long as they don't completely discourage people from making new threads when they want to.

 No.16444

I haven't read one in a long time. The last one I completed was Yu-No. I prefer older VNs (pre 2000) in general, I think the only recent (post 2000) VNs I've read and completed was Swan Song or Saya no Uta. Then again I don't read much books in general.

symphonic rain. saya no uta is not a happy one.

Pretty sure Saya no Uta is the shorter one so I'd start with that!
It doesn't have a ton of choices though and the story is a little disturbing but I liked it a lot when I first read it. Actually I think it's the first VN I've ever read!

Finished Saya no Uta. I wish there was a better ending for Saya and Fuminori but I guess that's what you get when you get involved with an eldritch abomination. Does anyone know if there's a translation of the staff comment page at http://www.nitroplus.co.jp/secret/saya/enter_ln.html ?

was right and Saya is cute. Please do not bully her.

I moved onto Muv-Luv Unlimited after finishing three routes in Extra, this is excellent…

 No.16924

I finished Unlimited, I'm going to take a quick break then start up Alternative.

 No.16927

I read extra/unlimited this summer I was waiting for the release of alternative but apparently there's some censored scene…

 No.16929

>>16927
I read the same thing, the 18+ scenes were pretty unnecessary in Extra/Unlimited so I don't particularly mind. I read that the censored scenes are still in the game just without the full CG, as long as the text remains during them then I'm happy.

Tezuka Rin's good ending is incomplete. The story ends on a very vague note. "Like these dandelions, she too will find her place in the world." Rin is a complex character with complex conflicts but we don't get to know how they are solved. This was like reading a Sherlock Holmes mystery but the story suddenly ends with "And the mystery was solved. The end." and the mystery isn't explained. I wish I could know what is Rin's place in the world. And also how she came to accept herself over night. I guess the author created a character so intricate he could not think of solutions to the problems he thought up himself. The neutral ending wasn't as vague (pursuing art in Tokyo).

I'm going through Muv-Luv for the first time right now. I've started Extra and so far I really enjoy the Initial D references, even if them and the PS2/Dreamcast references make me feel old.

I thought their tribute song to "Night of Fire" was really well done. It wasn't just a remix, but contained enough that you knew what song it was dedicated to.

Also, the main character losing all his mech game matches so far has me concerned.

 No.29509

>>29497
don't go skipping extra routes it sets the characters
you should consider extra -> unlimited -> alternative pretty much a single long vn

 No.29529

>>29509
Yeah, my approach going into Extra has been to enjoy it for what it is, rather than thinking of it as a hurdle before the "real" story begins. On that note however, I really don't like Chizuru, so I think I might just skip that one out of personal preference, rather than trying to rush the story. Will I get a good grip on her character from the other routes, or will playing hers reveal more about her that I should know?

I am enjoying all the other characters though and I'm really hoping the 3 maids are in unlimited and act as they do now.

I've been reading through Chaos;Head since I found out they have a mobile version. The protagonist is squirmy but painfully relateable sometimes.

 No.29762

Well, Muv-Luv was an interesting ride while it lasted, so I'm definitely looking forward to starting Alternative. I can see why the series should be considered as one long VN, as a lot of plot points were teased that just weren't expanded upon. It must have been infuriating for fans to have no answers at the time when it was first released.
