Does /nen/ play VNs?

I tend to take my time when reading them so I just finished Kira☆Kira a year or so after I started! Kirari's normal route was definitely the best!
The game had a pretty slow pace and reading through the story was very relaxing, although there were some intense moments as well! Maybe I'll become a punk rocker and travel across the country if I ever learn how to play guitar!

Please share your VN experiences and recommendations in this thread!

Like >>8508 said they're usually used to help you get better at Japanese! Just look up the words you don't know or maybe try to play a translated version first so you know what's going on!
There are lots of great translations for a lot of VNs so you don't have to know any Japanese to read those, you might miss out on some great puns though! Just try to stay clear of mangagamer translations since those are usually pretty terrible... Although those might be unavoidable if you don't speak any Japanese at all!

I've started to re-read sharin no kuni since I dropped the game before finishing all routes last time I played it! Maybe I'll share some funny screenshots in this thread!

Yeah, although I appreciate what mangagamer does, their translation quality wasn't so great from what I remember. I heard they've been improving though.

The anime general never stopped people from making more anime threads, so it's probably okay to have a few of these as long as they don't completely discourage people from making new threads when they want to.

Tezuka Rin's good ending is incomplete. The story ends on a very vague note. "Like these dandelions, she too will find her place in the world." Rin is a complex character with complex conflicts but we don't get to know how they are solved. This was like reading a Sherlock Holmes mystery but the story suddenly ends with "And the mystery was solved. The end." and the mystery isn't explained. I wish I could know what is Rin's place in the world. And also how she came to accept herself over night. I guess the author created a character so intricate he could not think of solutions to the problems he thought up himself. The neutral ending wasn't as vague (pursuing art in Tokyo).

I'm going through Muv-Luv for the first time right now. I've started Extra and so far I really enjoy the Initial D references, even if them and the PS2/Dreamcast references make me feel old.

I thought their tribute song to "Night of Fire" was really well done. It wasn't just a remix, but contained enough that you knew what song it was dedicated to.

Also, the main character losing all his mech game matches so far has me concerned.

don't go skipping extra routes it sets the characters
you should consider extra -> unlimited -> alternative pretty much a single long vn

 No.29529

>>29509
Yeah, my approach going into Extra has been to enjoy it for what it is, rather than thinking of it as a hurdle before the "real" story begins. On that note however, I really don't like Chizuru, so I think I might just skip that one out of personal preference, rather than trying to rush the story. Will I get a good grip on her character from the other routes, or will playing hers reveal more about her that I should know?

I am enjoying all the other characters though and I'm really hoping the 3 maids are in unlimited and act as they do now.

 No.29762

Well, Muv-Luv was an interesting ride while it lasted, so I'm definitely looking forward to starting Alternative. I can see why the series should be considered as one long VN, as a lot of plot points were teased that just weren't expanded upon. It must have been infuriating for fans to have no answers at the time when it was first released.

I don't have much of a good experience with VNs myself, maybe some of you will see through the story and provide some insight.
I played yoake mae yori ruri iro na in a translated version which turned out to be half translated, so certain routes didn't work, resulted in bad ends which was obviously a bad experience. I somewhat enjoyed the art. Played through the standard route, I'm not big on princesseses so it was ok overall. One thing I didn't enjoy was clicking through all the text, specifically the clicking, I was very worried how there isn't a special VN controller for people so their standard buttons won't wear out.
Next thing I played was Air. Loved the atmosphere of that little town, it's so amazing, if I ever go to japan, I want to see a small sleepy fishing town like that. So aside of that, the problems begin. First I tried playing through the standard route, it didn't really work, I tried to uncover how stuff is, tried this and that. So at this point the atmopshere is obviously pulling me in and I have a little more info on the characters so I'm getting involved. I try to go on routes that seem obvious from the text, it feels like it's hinting it here and there, but none of it works. So feeling helpless I pull up the web and finally got on a route where I get a H scene, but the story is absolutely miserable with an impending doom coming for the character, smile and optimism gone. None of the routes save the situation and I keep looking for routes and stuff but none of it makes sense. Like, it doesn't actually go in the way it hints it should be going, so I'm trying to go for a route and I just get more scenes from an unrelated one, feeling of helplessness is getting to me and I quit the whole thing because I can't do anything, the answers that lead to some routes make absolutely zero sense.
Years later I remember the feeling of that little town and I watch the anime adaptation. The anime adaptation has like five thousand times the story I barely even scratched in the surface and I watch in awe.
Recently I got recommended Tsukihime by a type-moonie so I automatically watch the anime and it basically has the same progression of a story in 12 episodes, I inform said guy that I watch the anime and he's like 'wth is this trash, I talked about the VN'.
But in my mind there is no way in hell I touch a VN again, I don't like that sort of nonsense when I get trolled to death by writers who write the story in such way that all the signs are misleading and I just get thousand bad ends because I somehow don't think in a way the writer does or the main character should(this causes a very bad feeling of a useless brain as a side effect). Since I played those VNs translated, I obviously don't know if I just got screwed by bad translation or what (luckily this can be evaded now that I can read japanese).
I also don't like that sort of progression system when you have to play a route first to be able to play another, it's just too meta and non-immersive for me. Maybe I'm just not a VN person, but you guys surely know more about this than I do.

Okay so I went to download Fate but now there's some kind of Realta Nua version floating around? I only remember playing the original back in the day with the mirror moon translation but apparently this new version has voice acting and improved art and stuff! They released it for the PS2 and the PSP later on and it's a C-Rated version with all the H scenes cut out but I think the one I downloaded comes with H content! I really hope so cause I wouldn't want to miss out on the infamous Tohsaka scene!

Personally I really enjoy how unexpected some VN routes can be, and I like trying all of the different options just to see what happens, but I can see how someone could find that off-putting.
Maybe you'd be more into kinetic novels (linear visual novels with almost no choices) like Planetarian, True Remembrance, and Umineko? They usually have an auto-mode, so you don't even have to keep clicking to read them.

I did it!
It has probably been 10 years or so since I played through Fate the first time. Back then I really hated Sakura in her route and I didn't like Shirou as a protagonist either since he was such a goody two-shoes. Playing through it again felt really nostalgic and I'm happy that my opinion on these two characters has changed over the years! I could sympathize with Sakura more although her route was still my least favorite but that's mostly because of all the long and boring exposition that takes place in it and although Shiro is still a super corny protagonist I admire him for his determination and staying true to his ideal no matter what! And that's why I prefer the Normal End of Heaven's Feel! Die you stupid traitor!! Why did they add a pointless epilogue for getting all endings but there's still no Illya route after all these years??
I wonder if I'll ever play through Fate again and how long it'll be before I do so. Even though I've changed since I first played this VN I think I'm still the same person at my core and I hope that 10 or 20 years into the future I'll still like VNs and enjoy the stories they have to tell!

And here's what's everyone been waiting for! The reward for collecting all the Tiger Stamps and the true ending of Fate/Stay Night!

I think I'll play through Fate/hollow ataraxia next! I never got around to play it before but I've heard that it's kind of like Kagetsu Tohya and I really enjoyed the humor and tons of different routes in that one!
Please look forward to reading more about my forays into old VNs that everyone has already played! Perhaps I'll replay the 07th Expansion mysteries afterwards since Higurashi is on the rise right now! I might even use the fancy PS2 sprites!
