the first season was pretty good and the second season was a bit annoying with how horo acts but redeems itself near the end.

I've been watching Puni Puni Poemi and it is as crazy as I thought it would be.

I'm also thinking of making of webms out of scenes.

i decided to rewatch mai-hime hopefully it finishes downloading the episodes by tomorrow…

i'm rewatching Darker Than Black (´・ω・`)

I used to like this show a lot back then, let's see how it holds up now

The music itself should keep the show entertaining.

Darker than Black was as good as I remembered it, everything really, the animation, characters, soundtrack. The quieter episodes were even better than the action ones, like the arc where Hei infiltrates the Pandora lab near the Gate, and it has that really melancholic air about everything.

I'm still not sure if I liked the ending though…

Time for the 2nd season now. I didn't like it back then and dropped it but I'll make an effort to go through everything this time.

By the way, can anyone help me with a small plot question?During episode 24, what exactly causes Mao to "die"? was it the Gate that made him lose his grip or did I miss something?

iirc the syndicate cut the connection between mao and their servers

That makes sense, I didn't consider this before.

It was a lot simpler than that, at least from what I remember.
Remember the reason why hell's gate territory is deserted/lifeless? It's because nothing can live there without weird stuff happening. People were driven insane, or weird phenomena would happen all over the place, even turning people into contractors. It's kind of like a mix of S.T.A.L.K.E.R's zone and silent hill, things affecting you according to your psyche. The reason Mao "died" was because a cat's brain couldn't handle the stress levels being placed on it by hell's gate. His identity/consciousness as Mao was crushed.

There's no feed from a syndicate server. You're misremembering the functionality of the M.E. squeezer. Wow I can't believe I still remember the name of that stuff!

I liked darker than black, including season 2 and the OVAs. The ending of the second season was really weird and I'm unsure whether it was meant as sequel bait or as a last ditch effort to tie up all the loose plot threads. It's easy to interpret it either way. I think people give S2 too much flak because, ending aside, it changed a lot of things and didn't focus on Hei. I think the former was a necessity in order to keep things fresh and the latter is misplaced criticism. Hei was never really that focused on in season 1.

Kind of on-topic… when you watch anime with resolutions significantly smaller than your monitor (like 480p on a 1080 screen) how do you do it? windowed or full screen? If you watch it windowed do you make the window any bigger than native? Do you do anything to clean up the background?

File: 1520788373153.jpg (21.56 KB, 400x400, 1336812458913.jpg) [ IQDB | SauceNAO ]

I hit alt + enter and it fullscreens. Things around it can get distracting but that way it's more like watching it on a tv screen.

I watch it full screened with the black bars

File: 1520789608895.png (197.98 KB, 1280x720, scaling.png) [ IQDB | SauceNAO ]

I usually watch things scaled up to full screen, but I think that most video players can turn that off and give you the original video size surrounded by a black border if you prefer. You can set custom zoom amounts too if you want it to be bigger but not full screen.

Started marathoning haruhi this morning. Now I'm at endless eight and I think I'm going to stop...

File: 1529292507847.png (2.3 MB, 1920x1080, [Doki] Suzumiya Haruhi no ….png) [ IQDB | SauceNAO ]

I ended up spending most of today debating whether or not to watch endless eight in real time(one episode a week) because of the convenient timing of my Haruhi rewatch. In the end I decided to blast through it, and I kind of enjoyed the different experience. Compared to when it was airing, it felt a lot different. WHen it was airing I felt like I got an experience closer to the characters, with the sense of an incomplete deja vu(was that line really exactly the same in the past 5 episodes?!?!?!). Marathoning it I lost some of that, since the script of the previous few episodes was still so fresh. But, I think I got to enjoy more of the work the animators did to keep each episode fresh. Even though I ended up watching the same episode 8 time over the course of about 6 or so hours, each experience felt (relatively)fresh. I think I finally noticed that they actually DID change the characters clothes between every episode, even though I remember people mentioning that in IRC and stuff while it was airing.

One thing I didn't like though was the disconnect from Yuki I felt. When I first watched the show, the one week delay between episodes really made me feel more of her pain at having to relive the end of summer 15 thousand and some times. I ended up kind of missing out on that, but I'm sure once I reach Disappearance I'll have plenty of time for that...

After the second one I just started clicking through the episodes to see if it was the same again and didn't really watch it.

I tired watching Index but it was the most poorly written thing I have ever seen. I'm watching Railgun now, so far it's good, it still suffers from some of the writing issues when it mentions things also in Index but it has more character and has not mentioned things in Index too much at this point.

File: 1544101431707.png (626.94 KB, 853x480, smug_saten_onigiri.png) [ IQDB | SauceNAO ]

I thought Index had this recurring problem where the main character isn't very strong but they still want to have big battle scenes. They just kept writing more and more contrived scenarios, often with the opponents taking incredibly stupid actions, so that the protagonist can have some way of winning.

I thought Railgun was cute though.

you watch raidex for the characters and the setting, not the plot

It harkens back to a time before Touhou monopolized otaku culture... Put on some Rozen Maiden, play some Disgaea, you can get a good old-taku groove going on..
Always watch windowed, even if 720p or 1080p and shrink the window so it doesn't take more than 2/3rds of my screen.

So I made this thread in 2016, and I set the bar at 5 years to include shows like OreImo, Raildex and Squid Girl which all weren't very old but defenitely felt like they were from another era of anime. Now even pic related is going to qualify to post on this thread, but it still feels like it have aired this season. I'm not sure when exactly it happened, but anime evolved somewhere around 2014 and hasn't changed a whole lot since then.

File: 1569298068603.jpg (56.22 KB, 500x500, beachnico.jpg) [ IQDB | SauceNAO ]

I feel like we've been in the post Love Live/SAO era for a while. cute girls + sports-like competitions and isekai shows. Not that there aren't plenty of other good series being made, but it seems like they never reach that level of popularity to start new trends.

Also it seems like the industry has been pouring a lot of resources into relatively unsuccessful reboots of old series these past few years.

Anime peaked with Love Live

love live the school idol movie is the "end of history" for anime as it were

I feel like it was eralier than that. 2010-2012 was the period that defined the anime since then.

Cardcaptor Sakura is coming to netflix soon, I'm sure most of nen doesn't care but this means I'll be able to watch it on my playstation in the living room. Can't wait!

Any details on the animation quality? Remaster or original?

I'm assuming they're using the bluray remaster from a few years ago. Don't know for sure though since I'm just going off what I saw while scrolling through my feed

I'm watching Fate/Zero in preparation of playing through hollow ataraxia! I also watched the infamous Studio DEEN adaptation! It wasn't "that" bad, it could've been an okay adaptation of the Fate route if they didn't decide to do their own thing with the Caster plotline...

The problem here isn't plotlines, it's the animation + panache that does the job. I mean particular ridiculous scenes definitely have their share too, but they would probably just be remembered as a bunch of goofy moments if the anime didn't look so bad overall

I'm used to watching older stuff so the visual quality didn't really phase me although the fight between Archer and Berserker was pretty dull thanks to that. It's pretty much what I'd expected from a TV series from that time but the UBW movie that Studio DEEN produced had the same quality so I can see that being a problem there.
I think the main issue is the story and how they try to add elements from the Heaven's Feel route despite them not fitting at all narratively or even lore wise. The entire Caster plotline simply doesn't make sense and tries to cram in Tohsaka's and Sakura's relationship but just ends up rushing and butchering it completely, basically spoiling the plot for anyone who hasn't played the VN without any of the emotional payoff.
I think it would've been fine if they took some elements from the UBW route like they did, perhaps spending more time to flesh out Archer as a character but Heaven's Feel is just so different from the other two routes that I can't really think of a sensible way to incorporate that into a cohesive plot that still uses the Fate route as the base.
It's a shame that they felt the need to add elements from all three routes instead of just sticking to the Fate route, it was unnecessary and turned an average series into a rather bad one. It could've been a good entry point for people who don't want to spend the time to play through the VN but as it stands I wouldn't really recommend it to any newcomer to FS/N since I imagine it being very confusing for someone who doesn't know what's going on thanks to everything being rushed while also spoiling all the major plot points from the VN on top of that, ruining the entire experience with no benefit to the viewer.
I haven't watched the Ufotable adaptations of the UBW and Heaven's Feel routes yet so maybe I'll check those out after I finish ataraxia just for comparison's sake! I'll definitely need to take a break form the Nasuverse after that though...

Yeah, I definitely can agree that DEEN's attempts of sticking elements from other routes into Fate were off-putting. Though I think they could hypothetically still go the way of universalism, if only they had made those elements more suggestive instead of plainly cuttig off fragments of other routes and desperately trying to fit them where they don't belong. You know, like making hints about Archer's true character like it was done in the VN route itself (I think it was that one scene when he briefly spoke with Shirou about his ideals at night) or perhaps providing a little bit more elaborate reasoning behind Shinji's participation in The Holy Grail War than in the VN. Then it could've been a nice tour to Fate/Stay Night as a whole, which wouldn't spoil anuthing but rather encourage people to read the VN in order to figure out all remaining mysteries. But even then, given what we have in reality, I still believe that it could have been a lot more enjoyable if it wasn't for the visuals. I mean, now that I recall all other anime from that period I have seen, I can agree that maybe they really aren't that bad in little portions, but when the director's imagination reaches its climax in unforgettable Archer vs Lancer fight, scene at the ruins, CGI dragon allegory, etc. their subpar quality becomes quite transparent. And the thing is that Fate is filled with climatic - or just epic - moments to the brim, so in the end I got to find myself at a loss for at least half the run, and honestly I believed that was the case with other people as well. But oh well, maybe I'm just to exacting.
>I haven't watched the Ufotable adaptations of the UBW and Heaven's Feel routes yet
Well, they are far from perfect too, but I found them more pleasing visually and more cohesive plot-wise, especially UBW, which I personally consider to be the best adaptation of all three. So good luck with that.
>after I finish ataraxia
Now that was a great VN sigh... I think I liked it just as much as FSN, although they are very different. Plot aside and characters aside, the minigames were surprisingly quite good, and soundtrack was on point too (as well as hundreds of its nice remixes like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0ZYNwvVn2w). Plus, HA explores some secondary characters in more depth than FSN, so even despite being all SoL at firts glance, it still stays true to its roots, somewhat. Like I said, it's a really good VN. So have fun!

I've never gotten around reading the VN, but I watched the 2006 F/SN back when it came out and it was pretty off-putting for the franchise. Shirou came off as terribly chauvinistic, and his whole "Trace On" ability frequently seemed to amount to "I can do everything that everyone else can do but better" type situations that you'd expect from a bad fanfiction. Or I guess in modern times, a bad isekai show.

I keep thinking someday I should read the VN though, pretty much everyone I've talked who's read it has said that the 2006 anime is a terrible adaptation.

Shirou does resemble a typical shounen protagonist in a sense (in addition to pursuing the kawaii ideal) that he constantly gets beaten the hell out of but at the most decisive moment does a bunch of projections and comes out on top, doing what seemed impossible just two scenes ago. Still, there is progression to his skill which takes him a lot of effort, and VN clearly shows that his abilities aren't limitless either. And the proccess of facing a stronger enemy is also exucted in a very suspense-like manner in all routes, which in combination with a sense of mystery that's present throughout the whole VN creates a really thrilling atmospshere, which alone makes the VN worth reading. And the same can be actually said to Ufotable adaptations, though to a bit lesser extent, in my opinion.

Yea they could've given Shirou and Archer more screen time together, adding some night talks near the shed between the two would've been an easy way to develop their relationship. I also wish we learned more about Shinji's and Shirou's friendship in the VN, like maybe a childhood flashback or something, because it's hard to understand how the two became friends in the first place with how different their personalities are. That's another missed opportunity that they could've capitalized on in the anime. The problem with uniting all three routes into one is Heaven's Feel, if that was their plan they should've used that route instead of Fate for their base. Fate and UBW are relatively similar but with Zouken joining the war the plot just branches off into a completely different direction from the other two.
The CGI dragon looked pretty terrible but I didn't pay much attention to that scene since it wasn't even in the original VN and they just added it to replace an h-scene. But yea the COOOOOOOL action scenes are the main attraction of the VN so I can imagine how the bad quality could be off-putting to a lot of people. At least ufotable did a better job with those in Fate/Zero!

I didn't like Shirou as a protagonist when I first played the VN years ago but he's grown on me on my recent second playthrough! He's naive and idealistic but these character flaws are explored thoroughly in the UBW route. The 2006 anime did a very poor job of explaining how Shirou's magic actually works. The VN makes a point of his "strengthening" ability being borderline useless while putting his life at risk every time he uses it. He finds out about projection magic pretty late in most routes and using it is even riskier while only allowing him to function as a back-up for Saber most of the time. There's only a few specific circumstances where he's able to beat an opponent all by himself. His abilities definitely weren't portrayed as overpowered in the VN and there was the possibility of him dying every time you make a wrong decision.
I'd definitely recommend playing through the Fate route of the VN at least! You can still watch the ufotable adaptations of the other two routes afterwards if you decide that you prefer those over playing the VN but you'll miss out on some interesting Bad Ends on the Heaven's Feel route and all of the funny Tiger Dojo episodes!
Just providing more context for Fate/Zero, which has the best narrative in the entire Nasuverse in my opinion, makes FS/N worth a playthrough. Even though the outcome is clear from the start to anyone who read the VN they still manage to tell a compelling story while introducing several new characters and explaining their motives and backstory all the while having amazing action scenes in almost every episode. Studio DEEN on the other hand had trouble simply retelling the story of the VN in the same amount of episodes.
